The context

The Talbot Rice Gallery is the public art gallery of the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland. It explores how the UoE can contribute to contemporary art production today and into the future. In order to increase its profile and audience interaction, the gallery required a new visual identity and website to open up what was thought of, in the cultural field, as “one of Edinburgh’s best-kept secrets”.

The new visual identity had to be distinctive and reflect the contemporary, dynamic and creative nature of the exhibitions programme, driving forward the development of the online presence. The new graphic identity and website should feel bold, brave and pioneering, aligning the position of TRG in context alongside other world-leading University art galleries in the UK, Europe and internationally.

The solution

With an adaptive colour palette that would borrow from the art pieces showcased, a unique logo that takes inspiration from the architecture of the historic place, and a contemporary online experience that merges animation, typography and engaging imagery, we were able to propose a daring brand identity that would set TRG apart from the ordinary art gallery landscape, taking everything conventional and staying away from it, whilst still ensuring the University of Edinburgh presence was clear.

I wanted to give users and visitors the experience of being immersed in the brand and, whether it being online or walking down the street, provide them with a feeling of exploring the gallery. Browsing the featured exhibitions, resident collections or events.
